Fresh from a Group One double at Randwick on Saturday, trainer Guy Walter hopes he can continue the stable’s winning run with consistent mare So Pretentious at Goulburn.
So Pretentious, a four-year-old mare by Bradbury’s Luck, tackles Tuesday’s Doyles On The Beach Class 3 Hcp (1400m).
Walter will also saddle up Ampersand, Bold Don and Phoenix Miss in the Weddings & Functions On Track Maiden (1300m).
Walter’s Randwick winners – Doctor Doom (Spring Champion Stakes) and Streama (Flight Stakes) – are both products of the Walter production line who commenced their early education at his Goulburn satellite stable.
“As young horses Doctor Doom and Streama both came through the system at Goulburn under my foreman, John Bateman,” Walter said.
“With limited grass available at Warwick Farm, having Goulburn, a great track and beautiful facility, has been a terrific addition, especially for my young horses.
“I’m more than happy with how everything’s working down there.”
Walter keeps between 25-30 horses in the Goulburn stable.
So Pretentious, purchased as a yearling by Walter’s brother Jamie through the Proven Thoroughbred syndicate, has recorded two wins and three placings from eight starts.
“She’s a nice mare,” Walter said.
“At this stage we’re not being too ambitious with her but she’s been very consistent and her last start win at Hawkesbury was very good.”
After a first-up half head second to Eteinte over 1200m at Goulburn on September 6, the mare scored over the same trip at Hawkesbury in a fillies and mares Benchmark 65 event on September 22.
After box seating, So Pretentious gained a split on straightening and scored by a three-quarters of a length.
“She’s done well since Hawkesbury,” Walter said.
“She’s a nice style of mare who steps up to 1400 metres.
“At this stage that’s probably the question mark with her.”
So Pretentious has had one try at the distance, beaten a short neck by Oh Lonesome Me at Goulburn on June 10 before to an 88-day spell.
Jeff Penza, who partnered So Pretentious at Hawkesbury, has retained the ride.
